Earth Side Life
One of the Blessed Three, along with Cynthia Green and Rita Begay. Janet is descendant of Caribbean slaves brought over from Yoruba. She was born in New Orleans, the daughter of a white man and a black woman who became lovers during the civil rights movement of the sixties in the United States. Her mother was born in Jamaica and her father was born and raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Although she was not raised in any religious tradition, in spite of her father's rigid Southern Baptist background, she started practicing Santería when she dreamed of Yemaya, the Orisha who is the goddess of the Earth's seas and fresh water. She was told to follow the Mississippi river to the north, in order to fulfill her destiny. On her long journey up the Mississippi, working odd jobs at many towns along the way, she started writing poetry about her experiences and about her growing awareness of Yemajá's presence in her life. When she reached Minneapolis, she met Rita Begay and Cynthia Green at the Caradog Welsh Pub, where an open microphone was being held every Tuesday night. |
