Etawa Three white coconut pieces; One black. In Elegguá All four cocunut pieces form a horizontal line between the orisha and the diviner. Darkness is threatening the querent, although it is still overwhelmed by the light. The light itself may abandon the querent. Revolutions and uprisings may be in the wings, and the querent's stability may be lost.

Apere Elegguá in etawa indicates that the querent's plans are not complete, nor are the querent's goals well visualized. The querent needs to spend some time in seclusion in order to rest and think. The querent needs to establish more effective goals and make realistic plans for achieving them.

The querent may also be spiritually impoverished at this time and this may be manifesting itself as laziness and untidiness in the house. A significant de-cluttering is needed in order for clarity of purpose to take hold.

Ejife Two white coconut pieces; Two black. In Elegguá All four cocunut pieces form a horizontal line between the orisha and the diviner. Ejife is Elegguá's true home, where there is balance between darkness and light, mystery and revelation, life and death, ancestors and descendants. The world stands in balance before the orisha who creates that balance. Apere Elegguá in ejife demands specific considerations, though. The orisha is answering 'yes' to the client's initial query, but Elegguá expresses concerns. Although all is well for the moment, intrigue, strife and danger could manifest itself within the world around the querent. The querent is warned to be cautious of all that is new. The querent should avoid all unfamiliar places unless that place deals speficially with the question brought before Elegguá. Do not stray outdoors too early in the morning or too late at night. Do not drive down unknown roads or venture into unknown neighborhoods. This is not a good time for a vacation or a business trip. Strangers should be avoided. Only by taking heed of these warnings will the querent be safe. ^

Alafia Four white coconut pieces; No black. In Ogún Three white pieces form isosceles triangle; One outside the triangle. This pattern is a paradox. When it falls before Elegguá in Ogún's apere, the diviner knows that the querent's life has been filled with obstacles and difficulty. The querent may be exhausted, or may be having difficulties sleeping, or perhaps worrying about circumstances beyond the queren'ts control.

The querent can be, at times, lazy, yet it is lazyness resulting from a desire to rest, or perhaps to simply capitulate, giving in the forces bearing down on the querent. At other times, the querent can be combative, resisting pressures being encountered, but a history of neglect renders these efforts useless, or minimal in their effectiveness.

The orishas know the amount of effort that the querent has expended, and they know the querent's goals and ambitions. Ogún, the tireless warror, stands beside the querent and will aid the querent, but the querent must be willing to accept Ogún's assistance, strength and advice.

The querent is warned to work with Ogún and not allow exhaustion to set in, because recovery will be difficult, if not impossible, of the querent's energy becomes dessimated.

Etawa Three white coconut pieces; One black. In Ogún Three white pieces form isosceles triangle; One outside the triangle. Light is being threatened by darkeness. The darkness is thick and almost upon the client. Blessings are trying to come, yet they are held back. The client's thoughts are not good. Something important is being overlooked and this could lead to downfall.

Too much effort is being expended, with too much force.

Proceed with open eyes, aware that there is a silent war among friends, some of whom do not have the best interests of the querant in mind.

Ejife Two white coconut pieces; Two black. In Ogún Three white pieces form isosceles triangle; One outside the triangle. Ejife tends to be positive, but when it opens in Ogún's apere, Ogún comes to offer advice for something that should be obvious to the querent.

The querent seems to be facing a period in which their efforts are out of focus. Time needs to be taken for meditation upon the direction that should be taken. Only then will balance and harmony be found.

The querent is warned of those who gossip. Do not trust anyone with secrets. In time, these secrets will be made known to the querent.

Be cautious in travel.

Okana One white coconut pieces; Three black. In Ogún Three white pieces form isosceles triangle; One outside the triangle. It is a bad omen when Elegguá give okana in Ogún's apere. There is overwhelming darkness, but there is some hope in the presence of the one white rind piece. The querent has a chance to overcome the present or forthcoming adversity.

Ogún is fierce, almost to the point of anger, saying that there are those in the querent's life who are working against the querent. The querent has been vain, arrogant and loose lipped, and these things have brought about this travail.

The querent needs to step back from any aggressive activity and think about relationships with others. Perhaps a vacation or a regimen of meditation will revitalize the querent and provide sufficient humility and deliberation to navigate the turbulent waters that the querent is currently found in.

Oyekun No white coconut pieces; Four black. In Ogún Three white pieces form isosceles triangle; One outside the triangle. Death is near in this sign; the querent is in very real danger. Do not fight. Do not argue. Do not carry weapons or travel with those who do. Be cautious of open flames and electrical devices. Do not go out at night, and do not be on the streets at three, seven or nine in the afternoon and evening. ^

Etawa Three white coconut pieces; One black. In Ochosi Three white pieces form an equilateral triangle; One piece, outside the triangle, forms a straight line with one of the angles that is perpendicular to on leg of the triangle. Etawa before Ochosi can be a sign of danger. Light is all around the querent, but the light is to the querent's back while the querent walks in the dark.

Blessings are in the presence of the querent, but this is not a good time to receive blessings. At the beginning of the querent's journey the querent's goals were clear and the path was open, but focus has been lost a and the path has become obscure.

Help may be needed before the on-going blessings can be received.

Ejife Two white coconut pieces; Two black. In Ochosi Three white pieces form an equilateral triangle; One piece, outside the triangle, forms a straight line with one of the angles that is perpendicular to on leg of the triangle. Ejife apere Ochosi is a favorable sign for most; it is a symbol of balance since Ochosi is associated with the scales of justice. For the law abiding, this is a time of fulfillment. Blessings will come to querents who are "just" in their intentions, and honest in their dealings with others.

But not everyone is altruistic in their intentions, and for those who are set on abusing other, Ejife apere Ochosi this will be a time of difficulty. Punishment may be awaiting the querent if this is the case.

Okana One white coconut pieces; Three black. In Ochosi Three white pieces form an equilateral triangle; One piece, outside the triangle, forms a straight line with one of the angles that is perpendicular to on leg of the triangle. When Elegguá gives okana in Ochosi's apere, it is a bad sign. The three dark rinds that sit on the floor before the querent marks desperation, enemies, and ill fortune. The light is still there, one white rind standing alone against these things. It is not enough to overcome the darkness that overwhelms. The dead stand behind this as well, the querent's ancestors who have been all but forgotten, and they come almost in anger. The querent has not been living up to the querent's potential and has not been thankful for the gifts that have been bestowed as a part of the querent's spiritual and genetic heritage. Ochosi stands over the querent in disappointment, but he is not yet angry.

It is time for the querent to make a pilgrimage to places of birth and ancestral origins in order to become grounded in purpose and to achieve clarity on the direction that the querent's life should take.

Oyekun No white coconut pieces; Four black. In Ochosi Three white pieces form an equilateral triangle; One piece, outside the triangle, forms a straight line with one of the angles that is perpendicular to on leg of the triangle. Sitting before Elegguá in Ochosi's apere, this pattern speaks of death, the dead, and darkness. Ochosi says that most of the querent's problems are brought by the dead, and that he comes to show the client how to move through and beyond this darkness.

A visit to the woods is in order for the querent. There, the ancestors of the trees will speak to the querent and quide the querent through the labyrinth of the dead, and back to the living, where the querent belongs. The querent should carry a wand from a Yew tree to enhance the clarity of the instructions given, and ensure that that the way is appropriately prepared.

Alafia Four white coconut pieces; None black. In Babaluaiye Three pieces form a relatively straight line, with one piece above and outside the upper left side or upper right side of the line. When Babaluaiye's apere appears before Elegguá, alafia is the most desired. This querent is loved greatly at this time.

This is a good time to seek solitude and meditate, lest the querent become obsessed with the presence of such affection. The querent should prepare for the times when the spirit is weak and the blessings are sparse.

Etawe Three white coconut pieces; One black. In Babaluaiye Three pieces form a relatively straight line, with one piece above and outside the upper left side or upper right side of the line. When Babaluaiye's apere appears before Elegguá in etawa, it is a warning. Querents receiving this reading are engaging in too many remedies for both real and imagined problems in their lives. They must meditate, clear their thoughts, and listen to their body and their spirit.

Querents need to become physically and spiritually centered before an accurate assessment of their health can be made. That which is perceived as "illness" may simply be the state of their lives, with respect to self, others and the universe. Order must be brought to their thoughts and spirit. Only then will the noise that currently surrounds them be stopped. It is at that point that the querent can understand the nature of their problems, be they physical, emotional or spiritual.

Ejife Two white coconut pieces; Two black. In Babaluaiye Three pieces form a relatively straight line, with one piece above and outside the upper left side or upper right side of the line. When ejife opens before Elegguá in Babaluaiye's apere, the answer is "yes" to the querent's concerns, showing that the querent's world is in a state of balance. This querent is born to be a priest or priestess, and if the crowning orisha has not been determined, it may well be this querent.

Regardless, Babaluaiye loves this querent and wants to be a larger factor in the querent's life.

This would be a good time for the querent to study the querent's genealogy and better understand the querent's origins.

Okana One white coconut pieces; Three black. In Babaluaiye Three pieces form a relatively straight line, with one piece above and outside the upper left side or upper right side of the line. Okana opening before Elegguá in Babaluaiye's apere is a stern, but loving warning. Okana is deep, dark and mysterious and those orishas who know the dark depths of human consciousness can be found in okana.

Babaluaiye not only warns, but also absorbs: the orisha can remove all blockages from the querent's path if the querent heeds the advice of the orisha. The querent must speak more gently of others and their own self. The querent must not blaspheme any individual or any individual's spirituality, for there is truth in all paths. Do not curse the light if you want to avoid darkness.

Alafia Four white coconut pieces; None black. In Aganyú Three pieces form an equilateral triangle; One outside the triangle forms a straight line through one of the other pieces that is perpendicular to the opposite line. The querent, at the core, is timid and shy. If the querent is loud and boisterous on the outside, it is only a cover, yet the querent is easily overwhelmed and quickly retreats back into the self.

To the person, Aganyú says, "Do not hide! Be assertive! Be yourself!"

The strong, masculine energy of Aganyú will follow the querent in current journeys, as long as the querent is attentive, vigilant and confident in the self.

This spiritual currents are hot and strong, so the querent should take care that exhaustion does not set in.

Etawa Three white coconut pieces; One black. In Aganyú Three pieces form an equilateral triangle; One outside the triangle forms a straight line through one of the other pieces that is perpendicular to the opposite line. In etawa, Aganyú says that the querent has strayed from the path to intended goals. Each time the querent sets out in the correct direction there are distractions and wandering. Eventually the querent becomes lost.

This is what the darkness within etawa indicates, and the solution is simple, at least in concept, but difficult for the querent to apply. The querent must focus on one thing at a time, not worrying about whether or not something else is being done. When the primary task is done, then move on to the next task, and then on to the next task. One task at a time, concentrating, ensuring that each step is accomplished without delay.

The querent should also be considering whether the established goals are the appropriate goals. Perhaps the querent has set out on the wrong path. A trustworthy elder may have some sage advice, in this regard. The elder may know of the dead ends ahead, and the bad detours that the querent may be tempted to take. Listening to the voice of experience and wisdom would be quite beneficial to the querent right now.

Ejife Two white coconut pieces; Two black. In Aganyú Three pieces form an equilateral triangle; One outside the triangle forms a straight line through one of the other pieces that is perpendicular to the opposite line. Ejife is positive, but an issue needs to be addressed. The querant needs to allow the universe to take care of things and not be so independent. There is much that is beyond the ability of the individual. ^

Okana One white coconut pieces; Three black. In Aganyú Three pieces form an equilateral triangle; One outside the triangle forms a straight line through one of the other pieces that is perpendicular to the opposite line. Before Elegguá, okana apere Aganyú marks the war between genders. Here, women cause problems for men and men cause problems for women; in this situation, the querent must be wary of relationships with the opposite gender, for in this environment the querent's interests may be at risk.

In order to survive this time the querent may need to make drastic changes and is advised not to discuss dreams and desires.

This is a good time to meditate and take special care to think through all plans thorooughly before bringing them into action.

Alafia Four white coconut pieces; None black. In Shangó Three pieces of coconut form a tight isosceles triangle with one coconut piece forming a straight line with the apex of the sharpest angle, and image which resembles the sword that Shangó uses in battle. Alafia is always a good sign. When it opens before Elegguá's apere it is a strong announcement of the thunder deity's pleasure. Shangó has watched the querent closely, guarding the querent from harm and leading querent gently through their spiritual journey.

Shangó is pleased with the querent's goals, ideals and means by which these are attained and acted upon. The querent should continue on this path, allowing Shangó to help in all things.

When this apere alls before Elegguá in etawa, Shangó comes to say that the querent's foundations are not as strong as they need to be if the querent is to have any success in accomplishing their personal goals.

The querent needs to better understand their limitations and needs to find a pattern within their life where balance and centereness can be obtained.

Ejife Two white coconut pieces; Two black. In Shangó Three pieces of coconut form a tight isosceles triangle with one coconut piece forming a straight line with the apex of the sharpest angle, and image which resembles the sword that Shangó uses in battle. When ejife apere Shangó opens before Elegguá, the querent's life is in harmony. But this very "balance" will become the instrument of change within the querent's life, for there will be sadness to go with joy, healing to accompany pain and growth to complement destruction. This will result in the querent's success and happiness, but only if the querent embraces and acknowledges the changes ahead.

Listening to the wisdom of Shangó will ensure that Shangó will use his sword to protect and guide the querent through the days ahead.

Okana One white coconut piece; Three black. In Shangó Three pieces of coconut form a tight isosceles triangle with one coconut piece forming a straight line with the apex of the sharpest angle, and image which resembles the sword that Shangó uses in battle. Although normally a poor omen, when okana apere Shangó opens before Elegguá, the letter shines with hope and freedom if the querent carefully heeds the orisha's words.

Even though the querent sees hope and light all around, the reality is that there is only darkness, but Shangó comes offering help. Unknown to the querent, doors are closing and paths have become overgrown from disuse. The querent's growth is blocked.

The dark rinds represent friends who are betraying the querent. Although this betrayal is unintentional, and not sinister in nature, they will bring turmoil into the querent's life. The querent's goals, dreams and plans will be in jeopardy if the querent doesn't start moving towards a position of safety, strength and balance. This is not a good time to take risks. The querent should only proceed in the direction of humility, personal integrity and inner strength. The querent should only be moving in circles of acquaintences that are solid and free of conditions.

Oyekun No white coconut pieces; Four black. In Shangó Three pieces of coconut form a tight isosceles triangle with one coconut piece forming a straight line with the apex of the sharpest angle, and image which resembles the sword that Shangó uses in battle. Oyekun in Shangó's apere is a dire warning: the querent's life is volatile at the moment, spiritually heated, and the querent's life could soon break out in destructive flames.

Due to this tenuous and highly precarious state in the querent's life, querent must avoid working with broken or improperly configure devices of any kind. Avoid situations where undue risk is involved, and ensure that the queren'ts home and workplace are clean and free of clutter, which could lead to serous accidents, which are more likely to occur at this time in the querent's life.

Adhering to this advice is the only way to avoid Shangó's fire.

When Obatalá's apere opens before Elegguá in alafia, it comes to prescribe a series of restrictions and guidelines that will ensure the the blessing of alafia are not missed by the querent. The querent should avoid all manner of uncleanliness, whether it's the querent's body, home or place of work. The querent's home should be a place of safety and centeredness and visits should be limited to those who are intimates within the querent's life. ^

Etawa Three white coconut pieces; One black. In Obatalá Four pieces of coconut fall into a pattern suggestive of a parallelogram. Within the opening before Elegguá in Obatalá's apere, the client is warned of impending disaster, turmoil that will be held at bay only if the querent listens. Currently, the querent's life is good and stable, but darkness approaches.

These deteriorating circumstances are occurring because the querent has not been thinking through actions that have been taken. The querent sees the goals and works to achieve them, but the querent is distracted from the path that needs to be traveled.

Elegguá, Ogún, Ochosi and Ósun are the Orisha warriors who can keep the querent's path clear of obstacles, while Obatalá fights to bring blessings to the querent's life.

Okana One white coconut pieces; Three black. In Obatalá Four pieces of coconut fall into a pattern suggestive of a parallelogram. When Obatalá's apere is sitting before Elegguá in okana, the cool orisha has brought a warning: Life is entering a volatile pattern, a period in which all hope and love can be lost from the querent's life. The querent must stand strong and work hard to overcome the adversity that is present at this time. Because the querent is surrounded by hypocrisy, no one is to be trusted, not even the best of friends. Reserve is needed here and the querent must not speak of plans, goals, dreams or desires to others.

The reason that this situation has come into the querent's life is that the querent has been too trusting, and has thus been rendered vulnerable to those who would take advantage of the querent.

Etawa Three white coconut pieces; One black. In Oyá Three pieces of coconut form a straight line, and the fourth piece forms and intersecting line with the central piece. Apere Oyá, etawa is a pattern of darkness and despair. The light is in power; blessings are trying to come. Goodness surrounds the querent, but the querent is fixated upon the darkness. The querent is wearing a mask. On the surface, the querent is happy, hopeful and pleasant, but under the surface there is depression, hidden from others.

The querent is tired and plagued by insomnia at night, and sleep is infested with nightmares and discomfort. Oyá says that the querent works too hard, pushing their self to exhaustion.

The querent must find a place in their body and spirit where they can be open to the blessings available. Ignoring this advice will cost them dearly.

Okana Three black coconut pieces; One white. In Oyá Three pieces of coconut form a straight line, and the fourth piece forms and intersecting line with the central piece. Okana is never a good sign. It is a pattern in which darkness overwhelms the light, which has become weak. This is an ominous warning that the querent has sunk into despair, but there is hope, since okana can bring about evolution if the querent is willing to work hard.

Oyá knows the danger that okana can bring. She knows that it stems from the bad intentions of others. The querent must be vigilant in all things for some time in order to survive the ordeals ahead. The querent must remain alone, resisting invitations from others to socialize. This is a good time for meditation.

The querent needs to beware of being seen in public places where gossip and malicious intent lurks in the shadows.

Alafia Four white pieces of coconut; No black. In Oshún Four pieces of coconut fall into a pattern suggestive of a curve. Alafia is a sign that brings blessings, and when it opens before Elegguá in Oshún's apere it is, perhaps, the most beautiful of all patterns. Those know Oshún know here as the youngest of all Olódumanare's creations. She is also the sweetest and among the most powerful of the spirits. Love, truth, beauty, prosperity and sweetness are all hers to give, and when blessed by Oshún, a querent has within their grasp everything that makes life worthwhile.

This pattern indicates that Oshún loves the querent dearly and that the querent's life will soon reflect that love.

Life may be difficult for the querent right now, but Oshún guarantees that if the querent flows steadfast like a river the querent will change and rise above the obstacles found within the present circumstances.

This reading of the Obí counsels the querent to be cautious and to proceed with vigilance. The querent must focus on the light, which is present in abudance, and not let the approaching darkness distract the querent from the path that they know must be followed.

Life has been mixing sweetness with the bitter, joy with despair, and ecstasy with misery. The querent should be thankful for all of Oshún's blessings.

Okana One white piece of coconut; Three black. In Oshún Four pieces of coconut fall into a pattern suggestive of a curve. Having opened in okana apere Oshún, the orisha has come to reprimand the querent, in order keep the querent humble. She wants the querent to grow and change, to become something more than they are now. She wants the querent to become full of life and to cast away their life of remorse, self deception and imbalance.

The querent is not living well, choosing to be surrounded by darkness, regardless of the blessing Oshún has placed into the querent's life. The querent is wasting too much time worrying about the outcome of events in their life and contemplating unhealthy acts. The querent needs to focus on that which is healthy and productive, not that which is abusive and destructive.

Through contemplation and constructive, healthy activities, the querent will be able to find the way through adversity and pain.

Oyekun No white pieces of coconut; Four black. In Oshún Four pieces of coconut fall into a pattern suggestive of a curve. Having fallen into Oshún's apere, in oyekun this orisha is displaying mild anger with the client. For many years Oshún has been with the querent, yet the querent has taken this presence for granted, and now Oshún demands the respect, thought and consideration that she deserves. ^

Etawa Three white coconut pieces; One black. In Yemayá A zig-zag pattern suggestive of an ocean wave. The darkness that approaches is a person, perhaps a close friend or relative, who may bring disaster into one's life. The betrayal may be unwitting. Proceed with caution in uncertain relationships. ^

Ejife Two white coconut pieces; Two black. In Yemayá A zig-zag pattern suggestive of an ocean wave. When Yemayá's pattern opens before Elegguá in ejife, it brings great blessings. If the querent's life is not centered and balanced at present, it soon will be. The querent has worked hard and will be rewarded. ^

Okana One white coconut piece; Three black. In Yemayá A zig-zag pattern suggestive of an ocean wave. When Yemayá's pattern opens before Elegguá in okana, it is a dire warning. Darkness lurks within the querent's path, so close that it is unavoidable. Lies, treason, gossip and separation are all possible.

The querent should cling closely to loved ones. family, friends and lovers may quarrel, so meditation on peace and harmony should be a high priority.
